4 Great Toys for Twin Babies
With so many great toys available for babies, it’s helpful to know which toys provide double the fun with twins. Here are just four that encourage twins to interact with each other, and allow them (and Mom and Dad) to enjoy the benefit of having a built-in playmate.
Play Mat
I loved my Gymini play mats for several reasons. One is how nicely they folded flat which was great for travel, and especially because we had to travel with two. Another reason is that the toys that hang down from the cross bars can be detached and use in so many other places: we hung them from car seats, the stroller, even latched onto the crib. As our twins learned to sit up we discovered a whole new way to play with this toy. I sat them up across from each other (lots of pillows behind them) and they loved to bat around toys at each other! The giggles were precious and many.
Large felt or rubber balls
One of the benefits of having multiples is that mom is not the only playmate. Twins learn very early how to play with one another and having an age-appropriate ball to roll back and forth is perfect. We also had a very large 8-panel play yard and would toss a few balls in there for even more fun. As they learned to crawl they would chase the balls around the house. Balls of varying sizes and colors are great to use as a teaching toy as the kids get older too. Counting, repeating colors, or even talking about which ball is the biggest and which is the smallest are things kids will learn in preschool, so why not start at home!
Mirror
If you have ever seen a baby giggle at himself in front of a mirror you are in for a real treat with twins. Be sure to find a mirror that is low to the ground and bolted into the wall so they are free to explore, touch, and even roll or crawl away and then go back to it if they want. The first time we popped them in front of a large mirror they tried to touch the other twin in the mirror first…then their own reflection! Who IS that other baby? They loved to touch each other and see it reflected in the mirror. But be sure you have Windex close by because there will be lots of kissing, slobbering, and fingerprints left when they are done!
Activity Centers
You don’t have to buy two but for me, the ExerSaucers were often the only reason I could take a shower on some days. Having them safely sitting in a ring surrounded by toys is a mother’s dream. What’s more, I would put them next to each other and sometimes the toys from each Exersaucer would touch and the girls would giggle like crazy.
They could each hop up and down in their seats and feel like they were dancing together.
