For parents of children with unique developmental challenges, finding developmentally appropriate toys can be a frustrating process. What toys will suit the current abilities of my child?  What toys will help improve those abilities?  In my own home we use the Wii Fit balance board to help our daughter who has gross motor skill delays as a result of her premature birth – and bad set of coordination genes.

I recently learned that Toy R Us devotes an entire section of their site to toys for children with special needs.  The Toys R Us Differently Abled Toy Guide allows you to shop by skill.  The choices are as follows: auditory, creativity, fine motor, gross motor, language, self-esteem, social skills, tactile, thinking, and visual.  There are also a variety of resources available such as a PDF regarding the top ten tips for buying toys and information about supporting the special needs community.

Very few companies for children reach out in such a way to the special needs community, so not only is this guide from Toys R Us helpful, but it is also impressive and commendable.
