As the mother of two Caucasian daughters and one Asian daughter, my house is filled with dolls. And doll strollers. And doll clothes. And all sorts of other doll paraphenalia. But since I live in the middle of the Midwest, ethnic diversity isn’t easy to find in the toy section of the big box stores. I’ve become an expert at finding dolls that fit our family and I thought I’d share a few ‘finds’ as the holiday season approaches!

All of these dolls are available in a variety of ethnicities – typically Asian, Hispanic, and African American. I’m going to link to a doll, but you should be able to find the other ethnicities (depending on what you’re searching for) with a few mouse clicks. If not, leave me a comment and I’ll try to find what you need!

Under $25

Les Dollies Dolly Licorice: This sweetie is of the ragdoll variety, with long hair and a mild licorice smell. I love her long arms and legs and her sweet face. This one is for the three and older set, so she’s not appropriate for the littlest ones in your family.

Lil’ Hugs Doll: Here’s the baby for YOUR baby! We have this one (in purple) and my youngest loves it. Perfect for her nighttime friend, the baby is soft and squishy and plush. One hand holds a bear, which is also a rattle. The feet make a crunchy, crinkly sound when squeezed. A big plus for busy moms – the baby is easily washable in the machine.

Corelle Poupette Doll: On the holiday list for my youngest this year (shhh – don’t tell her!), I haven’t been able to play with this sweet girl yet. However, the online reviews are excellent and she’s appropriate for ages 2 and up, perfect for little ones who are ready for a ‘big girl’ doll but don’t meet the 3+ age requirements that many dolls have.

Over $25 (for the 3+ set)

I’m a sucker for the American Girl dolls. We have three Bitty Babies as well as the more ‘grown up’ Samantha. The Bitty Babies aren’t fabulous at representing ethnic diversity, although they make an attempt. However, I’m in love with the Just Like You dolls. You (or your child) can pick the hair color, eye color, and skin color. Then add earrings and some ridiculously expensive outfits and you’re set! Yes, American Girl products are not an every day purchase for most of us, but the quality is excellent. Dolls can be sent to the ‘doll hospital’ for emergency repairs and products like cribs and strollers come with a lifetime replacement warranty.

Corelle is, in my opinion, the leader in terrific dolls of all types and ethnic representations. As noted above, there are several in a lower price range but if you’re looking for a ‘wow’ gift, try these sweeties, the Les Cheries collection. In the $30-$40 range, these dolls are great for your 5+ child, giving you an ‘American Girl’ experience without the price tag.

Although I personally don’t see the appeal (who wants another crying baby in the house???), my daughters love any doll that cries, pees, talks, and eats. The Little Mommy Real Loving Baby Doll  ranks at the top of the crib with sweet features, a cuddly body, a very ‘interactive’ personality. She recognizes her name, plays peek-a-boo, and talks.

If you’re looking for diversity of a different type, Corelle has your covered there too. Baby Marie speaks six different languages and allows parents to record and share a short message. Priced above $75, Marie is a soft bodied doll with hair that begs to be brushed!

These are just a few of the dolls out there for consideration. Hopefully this helps you on your way to finding the perfect holiday addition to your ‘family’.

One Response to Finding Ethnic Dolls for Your Adopted Child

I’ve come across some more BEAUTIFUL ethnic dolls that shouldn’t be
overlooked! $29.95. each – 16″ all vinyl, Asian, Hispanic, African-American & Caucasian dolls! These dolls have non-blinking acrylic eyes, beautiful
rooted hair, ethnically-accurate features and are dressed in fashionable
little play outfits! Very realistic and durable, but have the appearance of
    the more expensive collectible dolls!
