Having Fun When Trying to Conceive
When a couple or even a single person decide to have a baby the journey can be an exciting and fun one. Trying to conceive or TTC has many facets to it. For first-timers it is a journey of discovery and learning. It is also a time of shared joy and bonding for couples. Even though it was eight years ago, I still remember the joy of this time.
Being private people, hubby and I didn’t tell anyone about our decision to try for a baby after almost five years of marriage. Despite me never wanting to have children, once I met husband it just felt right. Fun things we did as couple during this time included:
•Learning a lot about fertility, conception, ovulation and the works. We shared a lot of what we learned and we surely learned a lot. Our favorite read was Taking Charge of your Fertility by Toni Weschler, MPH.
•Bedroom boredom can set in especially when it’s ovulation time, what some couples like to call the big ‘o’. Remember that this is not the only place where lovemaking can take place. Plus spice things up, make it fun – forget about trying to make a baby and do what comes naturally. Sometimes, take a break from consciously trying and go away together on a romantic weekend. Just do this during the time when ovulation will occur.
•Learning to laugh together during this time is also important. You will find lots to laugh about, even seemingly mundane things like what position to lie in after intercourse. I would always break out into a laughing fit when the DH (dear husband) would arrange pillows to elevate my lower body after the deed – just to improve the chances of the swimmers finding the egg.
•Keep a journal or record all the little things you did to up the ante. I know we included lots of baby carrots to our diet because I read somewhere that it helped. Anything we read that improved our chances, hubby made sure to go get it.
Trying to conceive can be stressful, especially when also dealing with infertility or other issues. However, despite all this, it can be made into a fun journey. Remember that stress can affect baby making so the less stress the better. Get creative and start working on the addition to your family. Sometimes we sit back and watch our son and laugh about the crazy, fun times we had while trying to conceive.
