As a Christian and a grandmother, I feel it’s my responsibility to help my grandsons develop their relationship with Jesus. My daughter and her husband are very active in their church, but I still feel it’s important for me to help guide and develop their faith, as well. How can we, as grandparents, do that? Here are some suggestions I use and recommend.

The best way to help our grandchildren develop their faith is by talking about Jesus and God whenever possible. This is especially helpful in younger children, like toddlers or pre-schoolers. If you are reading a book to them, talk about how God made the bears, trees or whatever. When you are naming body parts, talk about how special God made them. Point out that even though we all have a belly button, for example, their belly button is unique and God made it special.

With young grandchildren its especially important to help them know and understand how much God loves them! You can do this by incorporating “God loves you” as much as possible. Some examples of this are: When you give your grandchild their favorite treat, remind them that you do this because God loves them and wants them to have special treats. One of my grandson’s favorite things to watch is Veggie Tales. These are especially good for teaching young ones bible stories and morals and for developing their faith. There are a lot of resources that you can use to help develop your grandchild’s faith, but the easiest way is simple; show them God’s love by loving them.

If the parents of your grandchildren do not have a deep faith or any faith, it’s even more important that you be Jesus to them. I’ve heard so many testimonies from people whose grandma’s were the reason they have a relationship with Jesus now. So don’t think that because you are not the parent, that you can’t or shouldn’t speak into your grandchild’s life. It could be what makes all the difference in their faith walk the rest of their life.
