I am “Wonder Woman”… all things to all people. I should be able to be super-mom at home, right? Keep the house clean, make sure my daughter is fed and clean, shop, do chores and generally keep the family happy. And what about work? No problem, right? Attend meetings, manage development projects, work on SEO projects, scope projects, make sure developers, Project Managers and everyone else in between is happy. Shouldn’t be too difficult, right?

Well, for a long time this is exactly what I thought. Even when I was pregnant, I had a hard time accepting any kind of help from family and friends. But once my daughter, Eva, was born, the need to be “Wonder Woman” kicked into overdrive. I thought that I could do it all, and should do it all.

I had never really been around babies/children much, and my perspective of motherhood was severely skewed by two of my closest friends. They are both stay-at-home moms, and to me they really are Wonder Women. I look up to them as mothers, and the way I see it they ARE all things to all people (they definitely know how to be wonderful friends). They made motherhood look “easy” so I figured, how difficult could it be to manage a household as well as a full-time job?

What I have learned over the past few months is that it actually is possible to reach “Wonder Woman” status. How, you ask? First and foremost, you have to know when to ask for and accept help from others. This is one of the biggest issue that I have run into in motherhood. Think about it. It IS possible to maintain your home-life and keep work running smoothly, but it is impossible to do it alone.

At home, I have a huge team beside me! From dad taking care of Eva when she wakes up in the morning and being with her every afternoon before I get home. To our babysitter who watches our daughter in our home. And I can’t forget our family, especially my mom, who helps with anything and everything.

Today was actually a first for me. Eva has had a cold for a couple days, and I set up a doctor’s appointment for today to check for ear infections, etc. Every other doctor’s appoinment she’s had, either her dad or I (usually both of us) have been there. It never really crossed my mind before that one of us wouldn’t attend a doctor’s visit! But when it came down to it, it made the most sense to let our babysitter take her in. What?!

All day long I stressed myself out. I made myself feel bad for not canceling meetings and rearranging my entire day in order to go to a 15 minute doctor’s visit. Everyone I talked to (my mom, Eva’s dad, friends, babysitter) they all said I needed to let go, to let someone help. My mom specifically asked “what’s the big deal? you don’t have to be in charge of everything” hah! But I’m “Wonder Woman!”

So I learned a huge lesson today, let people help. It’s quite simple once you get past that “Type A” mom in you. Do you think it’s possible to reach “Wonder Woman” status? How do you do it?
