I’ve written a couple of articles for Conservative Moms now so I guess it’s probably time to introduce myself!  My name is Krista and I generally think of myself as a Conservative (more on that later!).  I live in Eastern Washington State, which is worlds apart from Seattle both in lifestyle and politics!

My Background

I actually spent the first half of my life in a little tiny town in Northwest Oregon called Clatskanie.  It’s an old Indian name and no one can ever pronounce it right! (Klat-ska-nye)

We moved to the small town of Leavenworth, Washington when I was in middle school.  Yes, that’s the Bavarian Village famous for it’s Christmas Lighting Festival, among many others.  Living in a small town where the tourists outnumber the locals every weekend tends to give you a skewed view of where you want to vacation!

I graduated from George Fox University with a combination degree in Chemistry, Spanish, and Christian Ministries.  It’s a really long story as to why, but after a year I went back and got my master’s degree in teaching – middle school math and science.

That intervening year I spent living in Seattle and working as an analytical chemist.  Made me realize I really like working with people!

My Religion

Most people think of Conservatives as religious and usually nuts at that.  I’d like to think I’m not nuts, but you can be the judge!

I grew up in a Baptist church, moved to a Community Church (loosely affiliated with Grace Bible College), went to a Friends (Quaker) Church while in college – George Fox is a Quaker College, and now attend a Free Methodist Church.  I think that covers quite a few bases!

I don’t hold strongly to any particular doctrines associated with one denomination or another.  I believe that Jesus Christ is who we should look to and I hope that Christians from many churches can gather together as friends.

Where I Am Now

Currently I’m a SAHM of an almost two year old ball of fire.  He’s the love of my life, next to my husband of course! I spend a lot of time online trying to connect with other women of all stages and areas of life.

I have a personal blog, Welcome to Married Life, where I chronicle my daily happenings with a toddler.  I also do a lot of book reviews!

However, I try to stay away from politics on that blog so when this editorial position came up I thought it might be a good chance for me to actually have to put into words the way I think about things.

My Political Views

Now to the important part.  My husband is a Democrat.  Gasp!  Sometimes I’m not sure how we managed to get married other than the fact that we were both in grad school and dating was a good stress reliever!

That said, he’s had a great influence on my worldview.  He spent 3 years after college working in the inner city of Atlanta.  He also grew up in Saudi Arabia.  Needless to say, his worldview is a little different than my small town Northwest girl ideas!

We live in a pretty conservative, mainly Republican area.  This is what I’m used to, what I’m comfortable with.  My husband has helped me see that there are other points of view out there.  You might say he’s helping me appreciate them!

Nonetheless, I hold pretty strongly to my core beliefs.  Things like human life (abortion), less government is usually better, and local control.

I hope you’ll join me next week as I’m planning to try and define conservatism.  Maybe you’d like to send me your ideas?

Any time you have a topic you’d like me to cover please let me know!
