Laughing Off Single Parent Stress
Life as a single Mom is not always easy but my humorous side has always played a part in surviving single motherhood for the past eight years. I truly think that without my sense of humor I’d have fallen apart. It gives me the strength to realize that there are some definite advantages to being the head of the household (although at times, I think my eight year old daughter is).
If you have boys, they will grow up realizing that leaving the toilet seat up is just so wrong.
If your budget allows, you can buy those shoes you really want and no one will say, “How much did those cost us?”
You can sleep on any side of the bed you want and not fall asleep to the sports network.
Your children still think you are awesome even if you gain ten pounds.
I grew up in a more traditional household. My parents were crazy in love and we enjoyed doing things as a family. There has often been speculation that those wonderful things aren’t as meaningful when it’s just a one-parent family. I have found that being a single parents allows you to really focus on the great times with your children even more. You are their world in the great moments and the not so great ones. It doesn’t matter that you are the only parent in the picture–to them, it’s a normal family if you don’t give them reason to believe otherwise.
There is plenty of stress that is a part of single parenting, but it can also be so rewarding. Don’t lose sight of your sense of humor in those moments that could potentially ruin your day. When you get that extra hug from your child, the stress is worth it. Keep laughing. It’s so good for you.
