Newsletters are valuable. More so than just using twitter or facebook alone! Use email newsletters to increase your marketing ROI and learn what your readers want.

  • Email is still viable. It is not dead!
  • Build your list – once you get to the paying threshold – it IS worth it to keep going.
  • Know what is the most interesting to people.
  • Make a survey – Survey Monkey, Wufoo, Mailchimp etc. all have survey creating features.

Segment your list -

  • Dont send the same thing to everyone. Make sure you are giving people what they want.
  • Ex. Daily deals for frugal couponer site.
  • Knowing your list will get you more readers.

Know Can-Spam Rules

  • Can Spam Rules:
  • Mail chimp and Constant Contact make you follow the rules, so having a service is beneficial.
  • Need to be able to get on and off a list easily.
  • Google Friend Connect – Be wary with this. hard to get off a list, and you do NOT want to bother your followers.

A Small engaged list is more powerful than a big uninterested list!

Email Services should:

Open rate – the number of people that open the email.

Click rate – more reliable than open rate because people not only open the email, they click on a link too.

  • Can see which links were the best
  • Can see which links were opened and which were not
  • Click segmentation is valuable, but expensive. Not all services have it.

Be visible – Don’t just offer a free ebook or free service.

Handpick people with newsletters.

Subject Line is Crucial!

  • Do not send tricky emails. It annoys people.
  • Do not use automated names service – it is insincere…especially when they mispell.

Killer Content

  • Do a lot of links
  • header, picture, blurb, and call of action for people to click
  • Intersperse links to various things.
  • Great when content is scarce.
  • Promote new posts, promote old posts, promote seasonal and timely posts.
  • Spread the word about advertising
  • Use affiliate links to generate revenue
  • Use affiliate links to share about deals
  • Themed newsletters are great to share new post, and old posts that are still relevant.
  • Top of sidebar, bottom of post – this is most valuable because they got to the bottom!

Design Services -Templates

  • e-newsletters have different HTML.
  • Using a service is best because it reaches more email services.
  • Always send a test email
  • Do people like the templates? Yes. They might say no, but stats show they do like the templates better.
  • Decent sites should let you import and export information.

Double opt in is best.

  • This means they REALLY want to be in your list.
  • Single opt ins tend to be bad list people. They are less interactive.
