Mothers Day Garden Craft

My son loves gardening. This is something that makes me teary eyed as it was something that my brother and I learned from my grandfather who died about 6 months after I got married. Watching him love it as much as I do is just exciting. So for the last couple of years we have made some sort of garden craft for Grannie and Nana for Mother’s Day. This craft can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be, and really is a great way to teach kids of all ages about recycling, sustainability, and growing your own food.

You will need:

• Some sort of terra cotta pot (the size is dependent on how many plants you are going to do)
• Acrylic paints
• Paint brushes, sponges, stamps, paint pens
• Plant markers (You can also make these out of Popsicle sticks)
• 3-6 plants that are edible (lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, herbs etc)
• Waterproof Acrylic Spray – Potting Soil (Use something local, and organic…it is a lot less expensive!)

Paint the pot using the paints you have chosen. Sometimes they will need a primer coat, and you will paint only the OUTSIDE. If your kids are especially young, you can do the base coat and then use stamps with paint to have them decorate it.

Let it dry completely then spray with waterproof acrylic spray. (This will prevent the paint from getting icky if it lives outside!) Fill the pot with soil, and then gently removing each plant from the starter pot plant it in the pot. The taller ones should go in the center, and the shorter ones should go on the outer edges. This is something that I learned the hard way, and you also want to make sure that you keep like plants together.

Try to keep things that like the same amounts of water etc. You can also do flowers if you like, keeping the same thing in mind when planting, taller inside, shorter outside! Make or use purchased plant stakes – I printed out images of the vegetables that we planted, my son colored them, and then we covered them with contact paper and stapled them to Popsicle sticks – and insert them into the soil. Tie a big bow on the outside, and make a card by hand. Then in a few weeks when you visit you can have a yummy salad with your favorite lady!
