Google’s new privacy policies have gone into effect, even though there are still serious concerns about its legality both in the US and abroad. Here are some guidelines on what you can do to keep your data safe – and semi-private – on the web.

In other news:
- The Senate voted down a proposal that would have allowed companies to opt out of providing birth control coverage for employees.
- Vitamin A may reduce the risk of melanoma – especially in women – by up to 60 percent.
- Women are inventing only 18 percent of patented inventions, according to numbers issued by the National Women’s Business Council. That is double the rate noted in 1990, but it still seems low to me.
- Netflix wants users to be able to share their video choices on Facebook, but a 1980s law currently on the books makes that illegal.
