Pizza is the Perfect Food
What’s for dinner? Do you hate that question as much as I do? We ask it almost every night, usually at 5:30 when we’re already hungry and past the point where we could wait 45 minutes for something decent to cook. Our son TJ has made it easy on us this week, because he’s been in a pizza kind of mood.
I really struggled with TJ’s insistence about eating pizza tonight. After all, we had pizza on Sunday night and Wednesday night… and here it was, Friday night. We’ll be having pizza again on Sunday. But he said no to pretty much everything else we ran by him, and he’d only eaten a corn muffin from Cracker Barrel and six saltine crackers for lunch. So I caved and said sure.
I have nothing personal against pizza. As a matter of fact, I love pizza. I really don’t mind eating pizza multiple times per week. It was just the principle of the thing.
But pizza really is the perfect food.
When I was trying to lose weight after TJ was born, my method was calorie counting and portion control. I cannot resist the foods I love, so the best way to handle it was just to limit the amount of it I ate. I saved calories up for pizza days.
Pizza may be greasy, but you can blot excess grease off with napkins. I remove several grams of fat every time I eat pizza.
Pizza contains multiple food groups. At the least, you’ve got carbohydrates (crust), dairy (cheese), and fruits/vegetables (tomato sauce). You can add meat by getting chicken or ham on top. Add more fruits and vegetables with pineapple, peppers, onions, mushrooms, and more. It’s a well-balanced meal in and of itself!
Pizza can be made healthy or hearty. If you make your own, you can make whole grain crust, use reduced fat cheese, and include extra chunky tomato sauce. Or you can pile on extra cheeses and meats, bake cheese into the crust, and indulge to your heart’s content.
And perhaps the best proof that pizza is the perfect food… Both you and your kids like it. There are no arguments when you say you’re going to have pizza for dinner. Well, except maybe when trying to decide what toppings to have – but you can always do half and half, or get more than one pizza!
