Preschool Curriculum for Teaching Preschoolers at Home
Many parents who want to keep their children at home, instead of sending them to an institutional daycare but they also worries about what learning materials to use. After all – if they aren’t getting preschool at a school setting, they should be getting it at home they reason.
Do Preschoolers Need Curriculum for Learning at Home?
Most preschoolers don’t need very much in the way of formal curriculum, worksheets and workbooks. In fact, the attention span for most 3 year olds for book work is very low making the average workbook very ineffective for imparting knowledge. Preschoolers are so busy, and naturally learn much about their environment from hands-on learning activities.
What Learning Activities and Programs Are Beneficial for Preschoolers?
There are several books and programs available for preschoolers and for parents who want to help their Pre-K children lay early foundations of learning. I like to have some tools and resources for my little ones, but keep the focus away from strict workbooks and desk work. Here are some tips for selecting a curriculum and program found useful for preschool kids.
In another article I’ll go over some specific preschool curriculum resources, but here are various things that parents can look at when selecting preschool materials for their children.
Manipulatives – Preschools are by nature hands-on creatures so any preschool activities should include plenty of chances for preschoolers to make a mess and squish things about with their hands.
Flexibility - Preschoolers learn at very different paces in different subject areas. Where one child may find manual dexterity comes easily, another might have much higher language skills. Any preschool program should be something that parents can tailor to their individual child’s needs.
Creative Play and Expression – Preschools need to be able to learn creativity and self-expression so finding ways to encourage that is important to learning. Music, arts and crafts, dramatic play and free-form imaginative playtimes are all vital for education at this early age.
Fun! – No one likes a straight lecture with no engagement. Not even adults. So why would we expect a young child to learn this way? Does your program have an element of fun!
By choosing a preschool program that is fun, hands-on and flexible, parents will increase their child’s joy of learning. This joy of learning is what will lay the foundation for serious school work in the later years.
