For this week’s Talk of the Parent Blogosphere, I am going to take a moment of silence in a manner of speaking. I know bloggers have written about many things this week, but I am not going to share that. I can’t think of anything more significant than the death of one of our own, so I am dedicating this week’s edition to the amazing, inspirational Susan Niebur, aka @whymommy. After five years and multiple recurrences of cancer, she passed away today. It is such a tremendous loss to her husband, her two sons, and to her fellow bloggers.

I ask that you just read one post, visit one blog, this week. Susan’s husband wrote a post about her passing today, Goodbye.

I have known Susan online for a while, but just met her once. She won the well-deserved annual Bloganthropy Award last year at my conference. What struck me most was that you would never imagine she was a woman who had been battling cancer for years. She was so warm and friendly. Beyond that, she left a tremendous legacy behind online and in real life. I imagine countless mothers and families struggling with cancer have been helped by her.

Even those of us who are not struggling with it have been changed by her: amazed and empowered by her fierce strength during in her battle and, as her husband says, her grace.

Not to lessen how special Susan was, but I think this would sting for many of us regardless. Even if I had never tweeted with her or met her, I would be devastated.

A mom’s worst fear is losing her children. Right behind that is the thought of dying and missing your children’s lives, all of the big milestones and all of the little moments. The mere thought takes my breath away. The thought of telling your children and husband goodbye? Unfathomable.

It is just heartbreaking. My thoughts are with Susan and her family. And I will be hugging my children just a little tighter tonight.

Instead of the typical sharing of posts from the past week, I am dedicating this week entirely to Susan Niebur. If you have ever written a post about her (or do so in the future), share that in the linky below.

I met Susan at Type-A last year also. It is so hard to think of any of our community passing away because I think as a group we are so full of life. Her prescence will be missed in the blogosphere very much!
