I am a fixer! If you give me a problem, I will obsess over it for days until I come up with a dozen solutions. Since I am a stay at home mom, this keeps my brain from taking a permanent vacation from reality.

I know Crossword Puzzles and Sudoku would probably be just as challenging, but I enjoy problem solving. When you mix problem solving with creativity you have a recipe for something we all desire: passive income. This can be accomplished by writing and selling tutorials. Effort will be required, but if you are an avid crafter, a problem solver, or a think outside the box kind of person, this should be a nice challenge for you. Here are the steps:

Step One: Be ORIGINAL!

Have you ever made something that people just loved? Jewelry, hair accessories, hats, scarf’s. If you haven’t, now is the time. Come up with a new design and then work on it until you have all the kinks worked out. You will need to perfect your design. I was making fused glass pendants for over a year when I finally felt like I had mastered them. It took much trial and error and many days of experimenting before I found the simplest way to make them. This is the hardest and sometimes the longest step.

Step Two: Document it.

This requires a camera and the ability to explain yourself in writing. I take step by step photos of the design process, followed by detailed written directions. Truthfully this takes me about a day (remember I have children, so you might be able to do it in less time). I use Microsoft Works to write my tutorials and it works well. If your product requires a pattern you may not need photos just a copy of the pattern and written directions.

Step Three: Convert your design to a PDF file.

Since I am technically challenged this was quite difficult! Try the simple way first: if you have Adobe Acrobat on your computer this should work. After you have finished your design and saved it as a file you should be able to right click on the file and pull up a box. In the box should be the words save as a PDF file. Click it. Hopefully, it is that simple. You now have your own PDF file or E-BOOK. If your computer does not have this function there are now many web sites that will allow you to convert your file into PDF for free.

Step Four: Set up an account on Etsy.com.

This web site sells all handmade goods and is a perfect spot to sell tutorials. People are always looking for fresh ideas and unique patterns. It cost twenty cents to list an item and a fee of 3.5% of your selling price. Tutorials sell in the range of five to twenty dollars each. Once a customer has purchased your tutorial all you have to do is email them your PDF file.

It does take effort but it’s an investment that keeps on giving for years to come.
