notebookI have to confess, I love paper. In all forms. I love everything from light, airy paper to thick, bark-like paper. And, I love it presented in any way whether it’s stationary or a good essay book. That’s why I was excited to review the Ecosystem notebook. If your mom, or any mom in your life, is a list-maker, a journal writer, uses a monthly planner, sketches or needs a way to distract kids in the car, this notebook system is perfect. There are a lot of wonderful details about the notebooks, so I’ll just got through the major points and let you check out the website yourself.

The Outside

  • The cover of the notebooks I got have the Flexi Cover (there is also a Hard Cover and a Paper Cover Essay Cover). It’s flexible (hence the name), really smooth, and very sturdy.
  • For the more classic look, the covers come in onyx, but they have some really vibrant cover colors like watermelon, clementine, and kiwi (I got watermelon and clementine, both of which I love).
  • There is a great elastic band that holds the notebook closed, which I appreciate since I’ve been keeping the notebook in my purse and didn’t want the pages splayed out.
  • There are three sizes of the notebook to chose from: small, medium and large. The two books I got to review were the medium size and the small size. Both fit easily in my purse and in the console of my car.

The Inside

  • The notebooks I received were “Author” version of the Ecosystem notebook, which means it had lined paper. The books also come with the “Architect” which has a grid printed on the pages, the “Artist” which is a blank page perfect for sketching, and the “Advisor” which is a calendar.
  • The back cover of the notebooks have a pocket which is good for little bits of paper or receipts.
  • The pages are smoothe, have a nice thickness and hold ink well (no bleeding or feathering even with a felt-tip pen). As a bonus, the pages are perforated, so if you need to jot a quick note, it’s easy to tear out.

The Environment

Talk about reduce, reuse, recycle; the Ecosystem notebooks do all three. You can read the details on their website, but it all boils down to the fact that every part of the notebooks from the shrink wrap to the elastic band has either been created from something else or with its impact on the environment in mind. You can even enter the individual code for your note book (printed on the back cover) to find out where the parts of your notebook were created. The company also has places on their website that tell you where you can recycle the books if you need to (not that you’d want to).

The Bonus

The people at Ecosystem must be as in love with journals as I am, because they have created a space for you to register your notebook. You register the number, and hope that if you should ever lose your notebook, a kind soul reads the inside cover and reports the notebook to the Ecosystem website si you can be reunited with the book.

The Drawback

The only negative I can find with the notebook is the cost. The small Author book runs between $7 and $11 depending on the kind of cover you choose. The cost might be a little steep if you aren’t someone who has spent more than that on a notebook or journal before. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

The Verdict

I think it’s pretty obvious that I really like this cool little notebook. Check out the Ecosystem site for all the details and options, or run by your closest Barnes & Noble to see one for yourself. Oh, and get one for Mom too.
